The Lee County Supervisor of Elections, in addition to conducting federal, state, county, and special district elections, also conducts elections for municipalities sometimes called a city, town or village. Municipal elections are held to select officeholders such as mayor and councilpersons, or to submit public measures to municipal voters.
Six municipalities in Lee County hold regular elections at various times throughout even and odd-numbered years. The Supervisor of Elections provides each municipality with contracted elections services by way of inter-local agreement.
The form and conduct of municipal elections vary depending on the provisions of municipal charters. A municipal charter is a city, town, or village's legal, enabling, and governing document that acts as a type of constitution.
